Thanks for replying. That was helpful. I was unaware that the use of French was still common at that time. In the past weeks, I've also become aware of the "New Orleans Tribune" a newspaper that caters to the African-American community that was also published in both French and English since 1865 (I don't know when they stopped publishing the French version). Also, the paper is still in business as I understand it. I grew up in New Orleans and I never heard of this publication. The only African-American newspaper I ever saw was the Louisiana Weekly.
