What is a "court" ?

Well this isn't exactly creole related but I thought someone here might be able to assist me in understanding this newspaper extract. Apparently New Orleans had a french language daily newspaper in 1913. I must admit that surprised me. I found an article on a family (Edinburgh) I have been researching recently and I'd like to get some clarification as to the meaning of the following extract. I translated this extract with the Google Language Tool since it was so short. Rev. Silas Edinburgh is buying 2 courts. What is a court? Is it just an empty lot or what ?

"Wednesday, November 26, 1913

Sales Recorded in the Office of Alienation
.
Purchaser to the seller, Properties for same, $ 3000.
.
Silas L. Edinburgh to James A. Sample, 2 courts,
N. Robertson, Villere, St. Anthony and Bourbon, $ 300."
