Re: Researching New Orleans Families
In Response To: Researching New Orleans Families (Pat A.)
Hello Pat, Have you established whether the Dellavalades and Pouponne were free or enslaved before the Civil War?
I know that the Keiths are descended from a Dr. Keith. I corresponded with a researcher, Lloyd, who was working on one of the Hyde girls, Josephine Isabella, who married an Isabelle. Thomas Isabelle and Robert Hamlin Isabelle were both officers during the Civil War and both have pension files at the National Archives. Thomas and Robert were ex-slaves, but apparently were educated while in slavery. Thomas married Josephine Isabella Hyde who was born on 28 August 1842 to Edward C. Hyde and Clarissa Keith. Thomas was mentioned in the St. Landry Progress newspaper of 11 April 1868. In 1865, his income was calculated at $204.25 with an income tax of $10.20. Their children were: George Isabelle - 27 July 1864 Charles Chandler Isabelle - 25 November 1866 Edward Calip Isabelle - 2 May 1869 Elma Lillean Isabelle - 25 October 1871 Hope this information helps!
