Similar to research on all families of color in America, if we can trace back to the Civil War, it is a question of whether the family was free or enslaved. The great additional resource is Catholic sacramental records. For free persons, there is the Register of Free Persons of Color of the Mayor's Office of New Orleans. A case study is available on my site. The study is entitled: "Finding Angelina."
