I wish you luck in your venture to find your grandmother's grave. I hope that you have some idea where in the cemetery she buried. I would think it would be next to impossible to find it unless you had some sort of map, or at least a pretty good idea. It is a large cemetery with graves all in the woods even before you go thru the entrance gates, most of which are vastly overgrown.
Until just 2 weeks ago (when I posted those pictures) I didn't even know that the cemetery was a black cemetery. Back in high school when my friends used to go there, we just thought it was a really "cool" old cemetery. I remember that it used to get vandalized alot back then, and eventually just gated up. I thought that was just awful, I wondered how people who had family buried there were able to visit. I was happy to see the gates open when I went there the other weekend. I hope that work will continue to be done thru-out the entire cemetery, and eventually those buried there will have the respect they deserve. Even though I am not Afro-American, I think it is a horrible shame to have the cemetery (any cemetery) gated up again. I still think it really is a "cool" place to visit, and should be a Richmond landmark just like Hollywood Cemetery, and be taken care of just a well.
Since I am here in Richmond, if there is anything I can do to help you out before your visit, please let me know (Riannan@comcast.net).
