Re: Evergreen Cemetery
In Response To: Evergreen Cemetery ()

When I was in high school (mid 1980's), my friends and I used to often visit Evergreen Cemetary. The upkeep wasn't great, but it was not totally overgrown. Back about 1996 or so I went there to visit, and of course the gates were closed, so we had to park and walk around the gates. When we got there I was astonished at what I saw. There were HUGE piles of dirt everywhere, and piles of headstones everywhere, but no graves. It was really kind of creepy. So we quickly left.
Today my husband and I went there. Much to my surprise the gates were open. So we drove up and walked around. When you first go in there is a field with only a couple of graves, and futher back in the field ther are lots of graves, but the odd thing is... all these people died in like 1999, 2000, 2001 etc... There are a few random old graves around that seem to have new headstones. As we walked thru the many paths of the cemetery all of those old graves were still there, but they were so overgrown that you couldn't really see them.
Is it even legal to dig up an old cemetery and just start over??? I know that the front field of that cemetery was full of graves, really old ones, but they aren't there now.
Here are the pictures I took while we were there.
