Re: Gorden Cemetery (Vance Family)S.C.
I knew there was someone else looking for the VANCE surname besides Andrew and myself. I don't know if you are aware of this --the VANCE ASSOCIATION. They are out of Columbia SC and other SC areas. I was referred to this by a genealogist named Robin Tolbert, who has a blog and a talk show, sometimes on the radio. Google her. If you can't find it email me direct and I will forward your inquiry. She seems to know an awful lot about the Vance surname. I found that she is related to one of the people that was in a story told to me from a VANCE decendant. This person was a political figure, well known in his time. Of course you know all Vance were not blood related and were owned by different members of a family as well as their friends. That LUCY name is so common, is very difficult to sort out who could be the right ancestor. The 3 of us, Andrew and myself, need to form our own research group off line and share whatever information we find with each other. I will strongly, strongly encourage the next suggestions...
Join a SC genealogy society. There is information that shows up in their newsletter, I have found it has given me other clues to follow as well as meet some internet friends who know stuff, or have met people that can further our search.
If you have not done this, write a story about your Vance search and send it to the editor of that Society, so it will go into their next newsletter. It reaches far more people than you think-black and white. I have done so and received some replies from this.
It is expensive but if at all possible attend any historical, conference or workshop in or near where you live. Many people attend these even if you are the only black person there. We have to do what we have to.
