In Response To: Re: Mt. Carmel Cemetery, memphis tn ()
I will be in Memphis in about a two weeks. I have not made any headway in contacting anyone connected to Mt.Carmel Cemetery. The telephone number listed in the Memphis Commercial Flyer a couple of years back as a way to reach the owner(s) of Mt. Carmel would just ring and nobody ever answered. There was no voice mail or way to leave a message. I was/am quite discouraged. I believe that Rose Hill borders Mt. Carmel Cemetery. I have death certificates that indicate that persons were buried in the "Mt. Carmel annex". I'm not sure if the "annex" is what ultimately became Rose Hill or how large Mt. Carmel may actually be.
I am interested in doing whatever can be done to force some action and bring some dignity for those buried on the grounds of both cemeteries. When I was in Memphis in 2007 I was told that a nearby church had the records. I did contact the church (I cannnot recall the name now but it is on Bellvue/Elvis Presley Blvd. just up the street from both cemeteries)but they didn't have the records and referred me to I believe one of the funeral homes. After going around in a circle I basically didn't get anywhere and do not know where the cemetery records are being housed. Surprisingly on my one and only trek into the Mt. Carmel I saw a headstone for someone who had been buried as recently as 2000.
I have family and friends in Memphis and some of them weren't even aware that Mt. Carmel existed. I think its a disgrace though that cemetery is not being maintained and that the whereabouts of the records are unknown.
