Memorial Day at Mt. Auburn, Baltimore, MD

With Memorial Day fast approaching, I wanted to give those interested an update of what will be happening at Mt. Auburn on that day.

Last year a member of our team contacted the National Park Service at Ft. McHenry in order to have a tribute service held on Memorial Day to honor those veterans that were buried within Mt. Auburn. It was something that they did years ago, but because of the horrible and dangerous conditions that loomed there, they stopped coming out.
They came out last year and held a wonderful service. It seems as though they have now made this a permanent stop in their Memorial Day services. That is a good thing, lest it be one more path to us loosing our history.

There will also be members of the Juneteenth Museum gathering at Mt. Auburn Cemetery on Memorial Day.

These ceremonies will begin at about noon on Memorial Day.

We, the families, are planning to be at the cemetery on that day, not only to honor our ancestors, but also to let the stewards of the grounds know that we are omnipresent.

We are continuously monitoring what is taking place at Mt. Auburn to ensure that it is done respectably and with honor and to make sure that the fate of the last 20 years is never repeated.

The stewards, Sharp Street Church, still have not produced a viable written plan to sustain the clearing beyond the next year or so. Nor have they addressed any of the pressing issues such as mapping and identifying locations of existing graves, the drainage issues, the reburial of remains and many more items. It seems their only focus is on improvements. But, the fight goes on…
