African-American burial ground in dire straits Missing money has Frederick Douglass Memorial Park facing abandonment
By KAREN O'SHEA
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Broken bricks and a ruptured wrought-iron fence mark the entrance to Frederick Douglass Memorial Park in Oakwood, a 17-acre cemetery named for the man who escaped slavery and went on to become a famous abolitionist, lecturer, writer and trusted adviser to Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War. Douglass is not buried at the Amboy Road cemetery, but thousands of African-Americans from Staten Island and around the city have been interred there over the last seven decades by families attracted to the name and reputation. http://www.silive.com/news/advance/index.ssf?/base/news/1223380822231840.xml&coll=1&thispage=1 Messages In This Thread
