Re: Washington Park Cemetery - St Louis

I work near the cemetery you speak of... Washington Park Cemetery 1757 Old Highway 94 South. This is located very near the St. Louis International airport. Back in 2000, the cemetery that is directly across the highway from Washington park was relocated.

Here is what I found out:
WHERE THE CEMETERY WAS LOCATED
Bridgeton Memorial Park was located on Long Road, west of Lambert Airport. The cemetery was relocated to St. Ferdinand Cemetery in Florissant, Mo.

HOW THE CEMETERY WAS MOVED
A grid system was utilized in which a grid was established and that section was relocated to a duplicate grid in St. Ferdinand
Only bone fragments were discovered, partly because the cemetery was disturbed prior to the Airport Expansion Program.
The site was fenced in and protected around the clock by security personnel.

WHY THE CEMETERY WAS MOVED
To preserve the grave sites away from the construction of Lambert's new third parallel runway.

WHO DID THE WORK
A contractor and archeologist managed by the Lambert Airport's Planning and Development Office.

WHEN THE WORK WAS DONE
From 2002 to Fall 2003.
ESTIMATED COST

$300,000 to $500,000
INQUIRIES

A dozen families contacted the Airport about possible locations of relatives in the park. Other families who believe relatives may have been interred at the site should contact Pearl Tibbs of Lambert Airport. Phone: (314) 551-5071.

Please note Bridgeton Memorial Park is a different cemetery than Washington Park Cemetery. Bridgeton Memorial Park was located west of Lambert Airport, while Washington Park Cemetery is located east of Lambert Airport. The last known burial in Bridgeton Memorial Park was in 1940.
