(K Wyer Lane) Dear Caribbean Researchers: I’ve always wondered where the Caribbean Ocean ended and the Gulf of Mexico began. Centuries ago, both were criss-crossed by our African ancestors whether they were enslaved or free. Do we African Americans have cousins in Haiti? Do the people of Haiti have “African American” ancestors in the US? Absolutely! Please read on! When I read the Hathitrust’s published report from the African Society for Colonizing Free People of Color (1830) I was surprised to find references to Haiti. Most of us believe that the African Society for Colonizing Free People of Color had focused only on Liberia. However a group of free African Americans also went to Haiti. Although American immigration to Haiti wasn’t as successful as Liberia’s, did some black Americans remain? Please click on the link below to read the 1830 Annual Report from the African Society for Colonizing Free People of Color. Search “Hayti”. Enjoy reading this fascinating report. K Wyer Lane
