AfriGeneas Caribbean Research Forum
Black-Mexico and Black-Mexicans
For those whose roots involve parts of Mexico, if you have not yet looked in the regular Afrigeneas Forum's old posted messages, you may be pleasantly surprised to find a RAFT of posts on the subject of Migration both TO and FROM Mexico. Many runaway slaves, as well as Free Blacks, went there before the Civil War. Some worked in mines near Tampico, while others went for the purpose of forming farm communes. One farm group was the Eureka Colony, near Vera Cruz, discussed in an old post to our Mail List. See that post at: msstate.edu/listarchives/afrigeneas/199906/msg00436.html/ Many eventually returned, some bringing mixed-race families, while others stayed there. You may wish to read the informative but QUITE LONG thread of posts about these migrations (May 2000 - at least Sept 2001). Books, links and actual data are given in some posts. Perhaps you may find a relative, or information that will explain where your ancestor went, starting at:* Editorial note 2/10/05; *This referenced group of messages no longer exist on this server
