Re: [JAMAICA] Spence
In Response To: Re: [JAMAICA] Harold Spence ()
Greetings, Tasha. Do you or any of your relatives know of Hortence Spence, who married Herbert Rerrie (early 1900s)? Hortense Spence was from Red Hills “Baulk” Westmoreland. Herbert Rerrie came from either Mo Bay or Hanover/Westmoreland. He could have been visiting an aunt in Hanover where he met Hortense. Herbert was a musician and also made pianos and guitars. Hortense’s parents (John & Alice) kept a shop, which was handed over to Hortense and Herbert when they were married. Business went bankrupt b/c of poor management and they went to Cuba where two of their children (Edward, Barrington) were born. They later had Grace and Gloria (my grandmother). I was also told that John and Alice Spence often “took in” the children of others that they would lodge and send to school in exchange for labor and/or money.
