Re: [SURINAME] Justina Josefina Ellis

Bob,

My father is Jan Ellis, and we are from the Curacao branch.

I have an interesting article (in Dutch) indicating that we (including the Suriname branch) are descendants of a Mr. Gerard Ellis, who was member of a plantation owners family, and a Mrs. Susana Anthony, who was a free black woman (not mixed but black, to judge from the use of the word "negerin"), who owned a number of slaves, according to her will. Interestingly, she stipulated that one of her slaves took care of Gerard Ellis until his death. This means that she was supporting him rather than vice versa. This unexpected situation was the reason for the newspaper article.

It was a surprise seeing the missing link in our family history being resolved by a newspaper article.

I will be in Holland next week, and will ask my father for the connection with the Suriname branch, and whether he has contacts with Jules.

My cousin Michael just tells me that Jules is indeed related, and one of his relatives has a ring with the same coat of arms as we have: three eals.

Best regards,

Rob Ellis
