Book: "Tracing WI Ancestors...In the P.R.O"

"Tracing Your West Indian Ancestors - Sources in the Public Records Office", by Guy Grannum, is an EXCELLENT resource book for those whose ancestors sprang from British colonies and former colonies. Grannum says, "It has been estimated that some 1.6 million slaves were [taken] to the British West Indies between 1640 and 1808...."

This book includes descriptions (and some photocopies) of records, along with their record group numbers, about The Slave Trade; Liberated Africans (freed from illegal slave ships after 1808); Births, Marriages and Deaths of Slaves and Free Persons; Africans in the Military (including pensions); Slave Registers; the Slave Compensation Commission (after slavery was abolished in 1834); and Plantation Records. Many other records, which do not pertain to Africans, are also listed.

A Reader's Guide to what is available for the British West Indies, it also includes Guyana and Belize. Records for some non-British islands are also included, as are records for Sierra Leone (which administered some West African territories).

The book is available at amazon.com at $15.95 and it is well worth the price just to see what is out there. If you decide to purchase a copy, please use our BookStore portal to amazon.com/
