[PUERTO RICO] Doles c. 1770
Our paternal ggg grandparents were a free slave named Antonio de la Cruz Doles and Bárbara Vélez, a slave born c. 1792 in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. Bárbara was the slave of a prominent resident of that town. They were the parents of 15 documented children. On a document in 1813, we find him purchasing the manumission papers of one of his younger daughters' at her birth. We have a transcription and photocopy of their marriage document and it states that Antonio was the widower of a María Calderón and that he and his parents were "morenos libres" or freed slaves. In some documents he is known as Antonio "Yngles" (or the "English") which makes us supect he was not originally from the island. His mother is listed as María José DOLES and father as Joséf de la Cruz. We have been looking since 1980 and have not been able to locate any more information on her. We suspect she may have been from nearby St. Thomas. Antonio died in 1838 at 80 years of age and Bárbara in 1867 at the age of 104. If anyone with links to that area or surname or knows anyone with that surname who might be interested, I would appreciate a reply.
My mtDNA Haplogroup is L1c, my paternal is E3a.
