[HAITI] Madison Smartt Bell's Trilogy is complete

Novelist Madison Smartt Bell has completed his trilogy of historical novels after 20 years of research into the Haitian Revolution and time period 1791-1804, when 1/2 million slaves in what was then a French colony rose up against their white owners. The first in 1983 was "All Souls Rising", which was a National Book Award Finalist and a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award. The second, in 2002, was "Master of the Crossroads". The third book, "The Stone that the Builder Refused", has been selected by Knight-Ridder as its Best Book of 2004, and the Trilogy has been compared to "War and Peace". While these are novels, and do involve many fictional characters, Bell has stated that everything portrayed about Toussaint L'Ouverture is something that he documented or could reasonably deduce from his research. In the newspaper interview I read, he described Toussaint as "enlghtened... a cunning warrior and diplomat who brought peace to Haiti for 5 years." He stated that "Toussaint was 200 years ahead of his time in conceiving a solution to the race question - which was the creation of a society in which all races could cooperate...if it had [stuck], I think it would have served as an example to us today." Sounds like a great read, and a tool for understanding what was happening in that area.

(I will check the Book Forum for cross-posting.)
