Since I was child my maternal side of my family, the BRAZLEY'S have said their background was French, with family ties to Martinique.
We had a family reunion last summer and met other Brazley members who have been told the same thing.
I am trying to find any connection to Martinique. The first time I find direct linkage in the census is 1870 Mobile, Al. Isaac Brasly and family showing his birthplace as N.Carolina. I have come to the conclusion that the BRAZLEY clan is linked to England and has no French connection. There are slave owners in the 1830, 1840 and 1850
census from Va, who even have the same spelling BRAZLEY. I have also
found a section of London with the spelling BRAZLEY.
It would be great to be able to clear up this mystery before our next reunion.
In many of the census my family members names have been mispelled--
BRAGLEY/BRAZELY/BRAZLY/BRASLY/BRAYLEY/BEAZLEY/BEASLEY. Another problem is that many of the family members have the same first names William, Edward, James. The family has spread out over the years.
So if anyone came give me a clue how to search Martinique information, I would greatly appreciate it.
