[BARBADOS] Owes/Ows From Barbados

Recently a cousin told me that our maternal great great grandfather, Joseph Owes, came to Southampton County, Virginia from Barbados.

Joseph was dead by the 1870 census.I have not been able to find any indications that he actually existed.

Joseph had 2 sons by Esther/Easter Goode. She later married a George Green. Joseph and Esther/Easter's boys was given the Green surname in 1870 and 1880. It was not until the 1880 census when the name Owes showed up in Southampton County. One of the sons, Joseph, Jr. was counted twice -- once as part of his employer's household, and the second time as a Green in his stepfather's household.

After 1880, the Owes surname appears throughout public records in Southampton County.

Does this name sound familiar to anyone?

Elwood C. Stith
