Ancestry.com shows the Hudson L. Coward draft Registration Card which says he was born in Barbados in 1886. He worked in NY as a Carpenter's helper in 1917.

He left Barbados in 1906, at the age of 21, according to the Ellisislandrecords.org where he was visting his friend Mrs. Simeon Riley. Both of these are names common in the partish of St. Joseph in Barbados.
