From: "John Weiss"
In his posting on the Public Record Office seminar arranged for October, Guy
Grannum noted that I will be talking on the Merikens of Trinidad. List
members in the US who are interested in this little-known community with
African American roots might like to know that I shall be talking about them
in Athens, Ohio, in April as a speaker in the Ohio University symposium "The
African Diaspora in the Americas: Current Research" (April 11-12, 2003:
http://www.ohio.edu/aas/) and then I'll be in Maryland until April 23 or
24 - I should be very happy to meet anyone who wants to know more (including Trinidadians, even people from the Company Villages perhaps). And also on March 22 at the University of the West of England (in Bristol) in their seminar "Land and Identity in the Caribbean: Past and Present"
I have had much help from members of this list by e-mail but have met only
one or two in concrete reality, so I would welcome any new opportunity of
meeting, especially in the US, so if you think there's a possibility, please
More about the Merikens at:
including an article and details of a current publication.
And many thanks for help received from people on this list and on others -
with any luck there'll be a book on the way in about a year's time.
