I posted the url below on the Mailing List last year about the National Archives of Cuba's collaboration with the University of Florida. I haven't heard about this for awhile. I'll check with some of the Florida University community and post my findings on this board.

So much of the history of the Lower South and the Caribbean countries is linked to Cuba, once the capital of "New Spain". The Spanish were dedicated record keepers, so these archives will open a new window of history about our ancestors from as far North as Georgia and the Carolinas, to the states that hug the Gulf of Mexico and westward to California. Our ancestors free and enslaved sailed back and forth across the "Spanish Lake" for centuries.

Perhaps these archives will correct our thinking that Miami is (was) the Spanish outpost of North America.
