Re: [BARBADOS] Licorish
In Response To: Re: [BARBADOS] Licorish ()
Hello, I am a Licorish in Boston, MA and was born here. My father is John Wesley Licorish and is from Shorey Village, St. Andrew. My granddad was Josh Licorish and was a postman in St. Andrew (nickname "lickee"). I have been very very interested in the Licorish family tree for a while now. Licorish is definitely a distinctive Barbadian name as you said. I've met many Licorishes in the US on the internet or in person and each one is from the St. Andrew area or their descendents were from the St. Andrew area. I have to agree therefore that all Licorishes must somehow be related. I always wondered if Licorish was a made up surname for slaves on the plantation as opposed to a former British name because I've never heard of white British Licorish families. Also....Licorish appears to be a surname that only exists or originates from Barbados when you look at the West Indies. For instance, my mother is from Guyana...and Guyanese will tell you that Licorishes originated from Barbados early in the 1900's or so when many Barbadians emigrated to Guyana + Trinidad in numbers. I am very interested in hearing any info that anyone has to offer.
