Re: Race/color in 1930 census Puerto Rico
In Response To: Re: Race/color in 1930 census Puerto Rico ()
I have been researching my Puerto Rican ancestry for the past few months and found that some families with one of my surnames (O'Farril) were listed in the 1910 census as "mu", or mulattos/as; but, in the 1920 or 1930 census the same people were listed as "b", or blanco. It seems that much of how people are described depends on how is doing the describing. Another curious thing I found while looking the baptisms for the cathedral in San Juan, the book for "white" baptisms also included Chinese and Africans who were being baptised as adults. I also found that my Rodriguez and Fuentes families were from the Canary Islands prior to Puerto Rico. Anyone else with Canary Island connections?
