In Response To: Black Canadians during the French era? (rodney sam)

Yes, while Canada was still known as "New France," there were many Africans enslaved there and most, have been documented in a series of French-language books written by Marcel Trudel. I've found my ancestors listed in several of his books, and since I don't speak or read French, I translated the text, sentence by sentence, online.

I suggest you search Google Books for "L'esclavage au Canada francais" and click on the FIND IN A LIBRARY link to see if there's a copy of that book near you. As I said, there are several books by Trudel, which documented the lives of Africans enslaved in Canada.

There are several other minor texts, but Professor Trudel's works are, by far, the most extensive.

Good luck in your search.
