Re: LUCAS/ RICHARDSON ONTARIO CANADA VIA USA
In Response To: Re: LUCAS/ RICHARDSON ONTARIO CANADA VIA USA (Sweet Lisa)
I have had no luck past that census, all I know is that they arrived a year or two before that census was taken. From where I have no clue, family rumour is that Moses (or a son) collected as many of his family memebers as he could (some were originally from Kentucky, others Indiana etc) before making the trip to Canada and settled on a sizeable piece of property once here. The property passed from family member to family member for quite a few years until after the fugitive slave act was repealled at which time like many blacks in the Chatham/Dresden/ Buxton area some of the Lucas's made thier exodus back to the US. Some because thier marriage partner wanted to return and others I would assume because once selling off thier property had the means to return. My ancestor Thomas Coleman Lucas and many of his children stayed and died here in Canada and once I get the finances to do so I will request death records and hopefully that will lead me somewhere.
