Re: Slavery in Canada
In Response To: Re: Slavery in Canada (Lisa B. Lee)
Just reading the posts and wanted to point out that some blacks who settled in Kent/Camden County (Chatham, North Buxton, Dresden) did stay and we are still here. I have traced my Lucas ancestory back to when the patriarch Moses brought with him his 4 sons and thier families around 1846 - 48. Some stayed and some left....the problem with tracing blacks who settled in these areas was that they would arbitrarily change thier names, birth dates etc due to the fugitive slave act and having bounty hunters sneak over and snatch people up. Some families who are still present are Parkers, Shreeve, Prince, Jackson, Lucas, Lee, Davis, Brown, Shadd, Travis, Carter among others. I have accessed some census records and such if anyone is interested. Also to Lisa Lee, I am wondering if you could somehow check your ancestory for a Walter Lee (wife may have been Charity), daughter was Effie Lee (Jackson) who was my great grandmother. My records say her father was a pioneer resident of Chatham but there is no record of where he came from.
