Sorry for the delay in responding to your post. If you suspect your ancestors were Black Loyalists, then the FIRST thing you should look for is military records. I've found that these records can be a treasure trove of information including how long you ancestor had been in Canada, from where, family members, etc. In exchange for their service to the Crown, Loyalists were promised land, so, in addition to the military records, you should also look for a Crown land grant, which may provide additional information.

All of these documents have been filmed and are available at the Ontario and Nova Scotia archives, the LAC (Library and Archives of Canada) as well as the Mormon Family History Library (FHL). You can rent the films from the FHL for about $6.50 each. There has been much documentation done about the Black Loyalists both in Nova Scotia and in Ontario. You should also check the UEL list (United Empire Loyalists) which is in print and available online. Any genealogical library with a decent Canada collection will have this book on their shelves, and you can also search this book on Google Books (books.google.com).

At any rate, this will take you some time, but you stand and excellent chance of being able to document your ancestors' service in the Revolutionary War and life shortly thereafter.
