Many fugitive slaves in America escaped the cruelty of slavery and found freedom through the Underground Railroad in Canada. As the African population increased in the mid 1800's in Canada, several self-supported black communities were developed. The Dawn and Elgin Settlements, located just over 1 hour drive from Detroit, Michigan, are two African communities that still exist today. These sites are opened to the public, and visitors will find the original churches, schools and other buildings that were once used by members of the black communities.
