Re: Slavery in Canada
In Response To: Slavery in Canada ()

Hello K.,

Thanks, you've put me on a 'track' to a resource I had overlooked. The History Section has a paragraph on 'Slavery In Lower & Upper Canada of this Link that mentions Matthew Elliott.
"The greatest number of slaves was owned by Matthew Elliott who had 60 slaves. Elliot had been a colonel in the British army. During the American Revolution he captured a number of slaves from patriot fighters and families. Most of the 60 slaves Elliott owned were captured in the American Revolution."

I have ancestors among those 60 slaves owned by Matthew Elliott and captured in the American Revolution. The British and Indian raid on Martin's Station in what is now Bourbon Co., KY resulted in the capture of of my 7th great-grandmother, Betty, her seven (7) children and five (5) grandchildren who were slaves of the Agnes (Moseby) Laforce family. The LaForce slaves were despersed among the British & Shawnee Indian captors.
Kijah & Joseph, a son and daughter of Betty were taken by then Captain Matthew Elliott.

In a strange twist of fate these ancestors went from being slaves in the United States to slaves in Canada and captives of the Shawnee.
