New Discoveries on Familysearch
In researching the families of my home community in the Miami Valley of Ohio (Piqua, Sidney, Springfield, Urbana) I'm finding several connections to Canada.
Using the Familysearch Pilot site and their databases for Ontario, Canada we're finding some interesting facts in the Canadian Census Records of 1851-1881.
We've located the family of my grandmother's 2nd husband, Theodore Mayes, who was born at Windsor, Ontario, Canada also the Highwarden family who migrated to Canada in the 1860's and then came back to Ohio in the early 1900's.
One connection of particular interest is the Highwarden-Smith marriage and family from Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. Clara Highwarden married a William Nelson Smith, both born at Sarnia ca 1866. Clara's parents were Simon & Elizabeth Highwarden who migrated to Canada from the US in the early 1860's. It appears William Nelson Smith's parents were Canadian of English descent.
Arthur Barrington Smith, the son of William and Clara (Highwarden)Smith came to Ohio with his wife, the former Edna Gray of Indiana about 1915 opened a Barber Shop and started a family, having eleven (11) children. The two (2) youngest children, Richard "Dickie" and Jackie, were my childhood playmates. I don't have the maiden name for Clara Highwarden's mother, but have located an Elizabeth Barrington in the Census records.... a possibilty as Arthur's middle name is Barrington.
I have more Canadian connections to follow-up on, but these findings are my kick start into using the Canadian files on the Familysearch website.
p.s. Now ... on to the updating of my database.
