1861 Canadian Census FINALLY Online at Ancestry.ca
Ancestry.ca, the Canadian version of Ancestry.com has FINALLY posted the 1861 (and 1871 and 1881) Canadian censuses online, searchable, with all images.
I'm sorry that they do not allow you to search by race, but even so, having this census FINALLY online is a godsend. For many former slaves who escaped to Canada after the second Fugitive Slave Act (of 1850), the 1861 Canadian census was the first time many of them were enumerated by name in ANY census record.
Their names had been previously extracted and published by Barry C. Noonan in his book, "Blacks in Canada, 1861," which has been tremendously helpful to us all these years (thank you, Barry), so it'a ABOUT TIME that Ancestry finally indexed and imaged this very important census.
In addition to the 1861, the 1871 is also available. Previously, the only online option we had for this census was the index provided by the LAC (Library and Archives Canada), which only listed the heads-of-household and had no images (though it's free). The 1881 was (and still is) available on the Mormon site. It's nice to have all three of these censuses available, in their entirety, on one site.
