The Loss of a Tough Blow

Geez ... was one of my FAVORITE sites for researching early Canadian newspapers. They had hundreds of them, complete with digital images, in an easily searchable forum.

... until Google bought them out, took down the Web site and now has removed all the data from public access.

Libraries, historians, students, genealogists are outraged at what Google has done, and their "official response," is just a bunch of mish-mash. PaperOfRecord was free and had been around for many years. I'm so sorry to see it gone.

Here's Google's response:
"As you may already know, Google acquired recently. We are currently working on the most effective way to search and browse this valuable content. We're doing our best to find a solution to include as much of the acquired content as possible. This takes time, and we appreciate your patience. We're constantly making improvements to ensure the best user experience.

In the interim, if you are looking for a specific source in a particular date range, use Google News advanced archive search at

You can also find search tips at

We appreciate your patience as we work to improve Google News archive search."

But just try finding something using their (Gawd-awful) search engine. Time for me to find another favorite search engine. I'm sick of Google.
