Investigating Santa Claus Family History
"Not knowing how old Santa is, where he was born or who his parents were is going to present a huge undertaking. It is best to start with the individual at hand and work backwards. Thus a search through some indexed databases could help out in this situation. What I remember as a kid was that Santa appeared on the holiday scene as Saint Nicolas. Perhaps there is a clue here in his names. My first search took me to Ancestry.ca where I located several donated family trees for Nicolas Claus. Most if not all of these Nicolas Claus’ came from Newfoundland; how interesting as I believe you can find plenty of reindeer in this part of Canada. I also found a Nicholas Claus on the 1871 census index, who was living as a farmer in Clinton Township, Lincoln County Ontario. He was 75 years old and of German origin, but I was not sure if I had the right guy as I thought Santa was much older. I checked the border crossing records for any sighting of old Nick, as we all know he travels quite a bit, and I found a Carol Claus who left Canada and arrived in Niagara Falls New York on the 20 September 1933. His estimated birth year was c1898 and again I thought this guy was too young to be Santa."
