Re: Slavery in Canada
In Response To: Re: Slavery in Canada ()
Thanks for your reply. I am specifically interested in Blacks who were actually enslaved in Canada i.e. slaves brought under the French and British regimes and slaves brought here by White Loyalists. I am not dealing with Black Loyalists or people who came through the Underground Railroad.
I am very aware that some of the slaves assimilated into the dominant population meaning that their descendants aren't necessarily Black and that's part of the story. Some Caucasians actually have slave ancestors!
Nova Scotia is difficult as most of the Black population there are descendants of Black Loyalists. Although there was slavery in Nova Scotia, it is hard to distinguish between the 2 populations. Ontario has a similar problem with the majority of the Blacks here for many generations having ancestors who came through the Underground Railroad.
The most interesting palce is actually PEI - because of the limited size of the population. I have found several people there who have traced their lineage back to their slave ancestors. A number of Blacks were brought to the Island during and after the American War of Independence by White Loyalists.
