Re: Slaves returned from Canada
In Response To: Slaves returned from Canada ()

I've done some research on the incidence of Canadian-born African Americans who were in the US by the first post-Civil War Census, 1870.

The subscription database Ancestry is especially helpful for finding an individual who at given points resided elsewhere than their birth location, whether or not one knows first name/last name/married name.

For the 1870 census, here are Canadian-born "black or mulatto" individuals residing in Mississippi.

[Name//location 1870//estim birth yr//birth place; racial designation//male/female when first name not make apparent]

Louisa J Foster//Natchez Adams MS//c.1845//CAN//MU;
[Freedman's Bank record: born c. 1848, Canada; Father: Levi Foster; Siblings: David, George, James, Levi Jr; Lizzie; Account 1871, Natchez]

For the 1850 census, Mississippi:

John D Newell//Copiah, MS//c.1820//b. Mississippi
For Canadian census/registration records:

John Newell// 1871// 51// b.1820// Ontario, Canada
John Newell// 1871// 55// b.1816// Ontario, Canada

Peter Newell//yr of record 1867//arrival loc. Canada
Henry Newell 1782//Marston'S Wharf
Henry Newell 1776//Nova Scotia, Canada
James Newell 1750//Nova Scotia, Canada
Jas Newell 1749//Nova Scotia, Canada

Using inferential reasoning and Ancestry subscription databases, we might tentatively suppose that an African American woman born in Canada in the early 1840s and taken to Mississippi at some point before the beginning of the Civil War would:

Bear children in the time span 1860s-1880, the earliest of whom would likely be born in Mississippi-->
meaning that in the 1880 census search engine on Ancestry, without entering a first or last name,and without specifying 1880 place of residence, one might look for a black/mulatto individual born in Mississippi whose mother was born in Canada.

For each individual who comes up in the search, we can work out a basic narrative from their birth year, birth place, father's birth place, mother's birthplace, appreciating that follow-up testing and corroboration are essential. When those parents are in the 1880 household, it also becomes possible to extend the narrative backwards in time.

Thomas Gibson//wife=Sarah//Beat 3 Tunica MS//Black//c.1858/MS
Father=MS; M=CANADA; [Narrative: Mother born 17-25 years before 1858, and in Canada; this mother then came/was brought to Mississippi by the late 1850s, wed to MS-born male, to have Thomas 1858 +/-1 year; if no intervening second marriage, MS-born male she wed would be surnamed GIBSON]

Eugene Downing//Ohio Pulaski IL//Black//c.1876/MS/VA/CAN
Father=Edward 1833 VA/VA/VA; Mother=Alice A 1845 CAN/NY/IND
[Possible narrative: Alice A. freeborn, parents went to Canada by choice; she, and perhaps her family of origin, returned to the US after the Civil War, likely Ohio];

William Morgan//Minneapolis Hennepin MN//Black//c.1859/MS
Father=MS; Mother=CANADA [Perhaps similar narrative to Gibson, above]

Margaret Wheeler//Attala MS//Mulatto//c1875/MS
Father=John/OH; Mother=Mary A/c. 1835 Ontario CANADA/F=CAN/M=CAN
James Wheeler, ditto above, c.1876;
Martha Wheeler, ditto above, c.1879;
[Possible narrative: Mary A.'s parents were born in Canada, with Mary A's grandmother likely born between 1790s-1815, whether or not in Canada not yet known. The trajectory suggests possibilities: early runaways; descendants of slaves held by Brits/French who settled in Canada before 1800; descendants of slaves of Revolutionary War Loyalists; descendants of southern slaves who joined the British under Lord Dunsmore's Proclamation and then went to Canada after the British defeat; Mary A's children, at least those in the 1880 household, were born well after the Civil War, suggesting a narrative for her own postwar migration similar to Downing, above]
