Re: Slavery in Canada
In Response To: Slavery in Canada
() What a beautiful B&B! I love the colours. About slavery in Canada, here is the original law passed in 1793 that did not end it but only phased it out. http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/centennial/30_antislavery_legislation.htm Slavery continued after this but as the years went on there was some more and more social pressure to not be involved with this practice. From Daniel Hill's "The Freedom Seekers" "About this time, judges who favoured abolition were handing down more and more court decisions against slave owners. In fact, so difficult did slave-holding become that very few slaves were likely left in Upper Canada when the British Imperical Act of 1833 abolished slavery throughout the Empire. In that year two young Blacks named 'Hank' and 'Sukey', slaves of a Mrs. O'Reilly of Halton County, claimed their freedom. They were perhaps the last slaves in Upper Canada." This book also has an entire section on the Butler/Bowzer family, including photographs.
