Re: Highgate, Donnelly, Thompson, Harris - Ontario surnames
In Response To: Highgate, Donnelly, Thompson, Harris - Ontario surnames ()
All the Highgates came to Dresden area in the mid 1850s, (Oliver, James Henderson and Aaron). Alfred Thompson was still in Cincinnati, Ohio in the 1860 census, so he arrived sometime in the 1860s. His daughter Ellen married Edward Donnelly in Ontario in 1867, and I do have their marriage record. I have also found the Ontario land records online for Oliver Highgate and Alfred V. Thompson. I can find no further record whatsoever in Ontario of Edward Donnelly, his parents were William and Minerva, and all three were said to have been born in Virginia, but don't know if he came to Canada alone. Robert Alexander Harris was Ellen Thompson's second husband, he is supposed to have come to Ontario from Paris, Kentucky. My g grandmother was Louisa Donnelly (b. 1869), the one child that Ellen and Edward Donnelly had, and she had a number of children with Harris. One of the Harris descendants has even sent me a photo of Ellen! I cannot access the 1861 Canada census on Ancestry because I don't have the world subscription. I have seen them in the 1871 census, and the 1881 also. I would appreciate a lookup of these folks in the 1861 census and the book you reference.
