My husband, a daughter, and I went to the New Canaan area this past summer. My husband had family living between New Canaan & Gesto on Malden Rd. from 1830 to 1900- Butler, Calvert, and Donlin. Now it's all just farm land and pastures. These two early settlements of New Canaan and Gesto were really only farms along the main road with a general store, and maybe a church. Homes were usually log shanties. Nothing has survived. The burial grounds are long gone too. I've ordered a book by the Ontario Genealogical Society that contains information of AME,Negro,and Gesto graves of Essex Co. Really hoping to find some relatives listed!
