Wellington County OGS Branch Disbanding!!
With much sadness, I must report that the Wellington County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society (OGS) has decided to disband due to lack of volunteers to take on the leadership posts.
For newly freed slaves, Wellington County paid an important role in providing a safe haven for thousands of blacks who ended up in the Queen's Bush, which spanned several counties (Waterloo, Grey and Wellington). The Wellington County branch of the OGS has done much to document the lives of blacks who settled there in the early to mid 1800s and had it not been for their work, many of the gravestones in "negro" cemeteries that have now turned to dust, wouldn't have been transcribed years ago, providing a permanent record of those buried there.
Oh, how much I regret this loss, but in the day and age of computers, more and more genealogical societies are struggling to stay afloat. And without fresh blood to run these groups, I'm afraid others will follow suit.
