Freedmen's Hospital

Last week I posted information on the book entitled In Search of the Promised Land A Slave Family in the Old South by John Hope Franklin and Loren Schweninger, which traces the history of the Thomas/Rapier family from Charlottesville VA to other states and countries.

Mentioned in book are Dr. Alexander T. Augusta (1825 to 1890) who received his medical degree from the Medical College of Toronto and went on to become the surgeon in charge of the Freedmen's Hospital in 1863 and Canadan born Anderson Ruffin Abbott (his parents were free blacks who immigrated 1835 to Canada from Mobile Alabama) who did his undergraduate work at Oberlin and also graduated from Toronto Medical School and became acting assistant surgeon during the Civil War. IN the pictute under Abbot it reads, "In 1863, he joined the US Army where he reached the rank of lieutenant-colonel. Along with 2 other Canadians, Alexander Augusta and Jerome Riley he established the Freedmen's Hospital".
