Re: INFORMATION ABOUT NEW CANAAN
In Response To: INFORMATION ABOUT NEW CANAAN ()

Hi Margaret,

It took me a while to find the information but here it is:

New Canaan is mentioned in Daniel Hill's book, "The Freedom Seekers" on page 48.

"From the 1820's onward, refugees migrated into the townships, villages, and towns of Essex County, including Anderdon, Mersea, Gosfield, Colchester, Maidstone, Rochester, Fort Malden, Harrow, NEW CANAAN, and Amherstburg."

The Ontario Government's site, http://www.onterm.gov.on.ca/geo/details_e.asp?letter=n&ind=401

lists New Canaan as a "d.r. community" which stands for displaced rural community.

Also, the following link will take you to an historical map that shows where New Canaan was, (it was in North Colchester.)
