I found a website that mentioned "New Canaan". It was the first official mention of it I had found. I believe it is in the Colchester area.
My ancestors, THE DANIEL SMITH FAMILY, lived there. His wife's name was NAOMI. He had seven children, one being my great-grandmother EVANGELINE SMITH, born in November 1854. She married my great-grandfather, JOHN WILLIAM LEWIS born in Ohio but moved with his family THE BERRY LEWIS FAMILY, in 1860.
DANIEL SMITH'S (New Canaan) children included LAURA SMITH, who married PETER BROOKS - and they are the parents of early 1900s composer SHELTON BROOKS who among many songs wrote, "SOME OF THESE DAYS" and "DARKTOWN STRUTTERS BALL": the first song being made famous by torch singer, Sophie Tucker. She wrote about her first meeting with him in her autobiography, SOME OF THESE DAYS.
Did New Canaan merge with another town? I would appreciate any and all information. Thank you.
