A Must Read for the Queen's Bush area of Ontario

Linda Brown-Kubisch published a wonderful book, "The Queen's Bush Settlement: Black Pioneers 1839-1865" in 2004 (Natural Heritage Books, Toronto) which does a wonderful job of detailing this area that straddles Wellington, Waterloo and Grey counties. Sadly, Linda died shortly before her book was published. She spent years doing research and took the time to list a brief biography of many of the black pioneers in the area at the time (including many of my family members).

The preface of the book starts with:
"Nestled in the rural countryside of Wellington County near Glen Allen is a small abandoned cemetery, known as the Peel Township Black Cemetery. There are probably hundreds of graves in this cemetery, but natural weathering, neglect and vandalism have destroyed most of the stones. Only a few are remaining and even those are almost unreadable. Years ago the broken stones were mended with iron rods, that have now rusted, the attempt to restore the tombstones probably contributed even more damage to the crumbling stone. These gravemarkers are the only physical reminder of a once thriving and important black community known as the Queen's Bush."

I will be happy to lookups if you had any relatives in the area, but I encourage anyone doing research in the Queen's Bush to purchase this book. Linda and I worked with one another for several years, via email, sharing information back and forth, and I had no idea that she was battling cancer at the time. I regret that I never had the chance to meet her in person -- to thank her for this legacy.

An amazing woman, a phenomenal book. Our ancestors are smiling because of the work Linda has left behind for us.

Be well, and good luck in your search.
