Rev. Wm. P. Newman
I'm hoping to connect with relatives of Rev. William P. Newman or others who have any information about him. Newman was an Oberlin grad and activist in the abolitionist movement in the US and Canada. Newman was a minister in Toronto for many years and was the editor of "The Provincial Freeman" (along with Mary Ann Shadd Cary) in 1855 when it was published in Chatham, Kent Co., Ontario. Newman was also involved with the Dawn Institute (or British American Institute) in Kent Co. (The Dawn Institute was commonly associated with Josiah Henson, who was supposedly the inspiration for Stowe's Uncle Tom character.) My gg grandfather John Myers was also involved with the Dawn Institute and was married by Rev. Newman in Kent Co. in 1855. I would like to exchange any and all information.
