1851 Canadian Census Images Online!

The Library and Archives of Canada (LAC) has graciously placed the 1851 Canadian Census images online for the regions of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Canada East (Quebec) and Canada West (Ontario). This census is not indexed, and like the 1901, can only be searched by location. But, if you have a rough idea of where your ancestor was living back then, you can easily go through each image.

The images are displayed in PDF format making them very easy to enlarge/reduce and print. Perhaps Automated Genealogy will come up with a volunteer transcription service for this census, like they did for the 1901 and 1911 censuses.

The images are excellent, for the most part, and in some districts, the census enumerator also included the state in which former slaves were born (though this varies from district to district, some merely stating "U.S., while others give more information).

And the best part, THIS IS FREE!!
