I have seen mention of a book a friend told me about this past week - Blacks in Canada 1861 by Noonan. Have searched high and low for a used copy for sale on-line but no luck.
I am researching the above family names for other friends. The Cromwells (Crommell/Crummell/Crowells) were in Nova Scotia by 1816 and by 1871 were in Howick Twp., Huron Co., Ontario and then later to Kent Co., Ontario.
The Turner family (Daniel) were in Ontario circa 1854.
The Montgomerys (Caleb) were in Ontario by 1843.
Zebbs from Pennsylvania sometime before 1871.
I realize this is a horribly long list but was hoping someone with access to this book might photocopy pages. Gladly reimburse for time, copying and postage.
