New Websites for Canadian Genealogy

Ontario Obituary Project -
** This site has more contemporary obits than historical ones, but volunteers are adding more obits frequently. **

Toronto Tax Assessment Rolls, 1853 -
** NOTE... You can view the actual pages on this searchable site, but you MUST use Internet Explorer in order to use the DejaVu Viewer (Netscape just won't work with the images). In addition, these rolls do not state the race of the person, so it may be difficult to differentiate your folks from others with a similar name. **

Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid (OCFA) -
** Not a new site, but is constantly being updated. You can even do a search of "African" cemetery with no surname, to see everyone in the database who was buried in a black cemetery. Also try using "Negro" or "Black" in the cemetery field for additional results.

British Columbia Cemebery Finding Aid (BCCFA)-
** Not a new site, but is constantly being updated. Unlike the OCFA, I have been unable to find any black cemeteries using the search parameters mentioned above. Useful information, however, since Vancouver Island, BC was founded in the 1850s by blacks who fled California to escape racial discrimination. **

Canadians Who Fought in the Civil War -
** Do a FIND using the word "colored" to find those black Canadians who fought in the USCT. **

Nova Scotia Vital Records (Nova Scotia Archives online) -
** In some of these databases, if you use the surname "Negro," you'll get several hits. Many of the images are available to be viewed online using the Viewpoint plug-in. **
