Re: Abolition / URR sites S. Ont.?

Lisa,

Thanks for your tips and advice, also the Detroit link. We'll definitely stop at the WISH Centre in Chatham. If time allows we'll consider Amherstburg. Ft. Malden sounds interesting -- but my boys tolerate only so much history. Esp. the Scottish terrier ... and my 10 yr old son.

I lived in Detroit growing up also, and did not appreciate it's rich history. I visited last spring and saw a few sites and worked at the Burton Collection. Only wish I'd had more time there.

The St. John -St. Luke site in the Detroit article sounds a bit suspect as there wouldn't have been a Church of Christ before the Civil War, and I don't see it listed with Michigan landmarks. But possibly it evolved from another denomination? I know Baptist, AME, Episcopal and Congregational black churches existed there before the war. It's interesting a Congregational church was there early. Do you happen to know if it was a black church from the beginning?

Here is a link to the Detroit landmarks site:

cheers,
Jennifer
